Osteopaths are university-qualified allied health practitioners who use hands-on techniques, including soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, manipulation and stretching, to assess and treat how your muscles, joints and connective tissue are working together. Rather than just treating the painful area in isolation, osteopaths look at how the whole body moves and functions to find what's actually driving your symptoms.
Both are allied health professions that treat musculoskeletal pain and injury, and there's a lot of overlap in what they can help with. Osteopathy tends to take a broader, whole-body approach to assessment and leans more heavily on hands-on manual therapy, while physiotherapy often incorporates more structured exercise-based rehabilitation. At Move Beyond Hawthorn we offer both, and our team can help you decide which is the better starting point for your specific concern, or combine the two as part of a shared-care plan. We love finding the right practitioner for you - regardless of what profession.
No, you can book directly with one of our Hawthorn osteopaths without a GP referral. If you're being treated under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan or have a specific referral from your GP or specialist, bring that along to your first appointment.
This depends entirely on what you're being treated for. Some acute issues resolve in just a few sessions, while chronic or complex conditions may need ongoing treatment. Your osteopath will give you a clear picture of expected timelines after your initial assessment, rather than locking you into a fixed package
Yes , headaches, particularly those linked to neck tension, jaw clenching or posture, are one of the more common presentations we see at Hawthorn. Osteopathic treatment can address the musculoskeletal contributors to headache frequency and intensity, working alongside any medical management from your GP.
Yes. Osteopathic treatment can be adapted for younger patients dealing with growth-related discomfort, postural issues or minor injuries, using a gentler, age-appropriate approach.
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows your osteopath to assess the affected area and surrounding regions, activewear or gym clothes work well for most appointments.
